Juan Davila

Since the early 1970s, Juan Davila has used the medium of painting to engage in debates around aesthetics, politics, and sexuality, drawing on the rich and varied traditions of Latin and North America, Australia, and Europe. Considered as a whole, Davila has produced a uniquely provocative, powerful, and influential body of work, raising to high art the visual landscape of popular culture.

This catalogue raisonné reproduces all of Davila's work to date—more than 1200 artworks—with volume I covering paintings, installations, and collaborations, and volume II containing works on paper. Together, they demonstrate that Davila's works are not simply reflections of a society awash with images, but a carefully articulated interrogation of the hierarchies applied to cultural material, and by extension, cultures. Davila examines the hidden tensions that lurk in the questionable ethics of contemporary society.
